They store these minerals in two tanks, one solution tank and another lime tank. The lime water solution from the lime tank goes through pipes to be sprayed into the water stream while they are mixed together with sodium bicarbonate solution stored in the solution tank. When they meet each other, calcium and magnesium ions in the water will be exchanged for sodium ions in the solution so that they both become water soluble and can be easily removed later on by flushing it through a second calcite filter stage.
